We focus on Yamagata prefecture which include a sacred place in the mountains, Yamadera temple, Mogami River boat tour, and the one of the three sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains, including the 2446 steps leading up to the mysterious Mt Haguro temple complex.

Tokyo - Yamagara - Tendo
Travel from Tokyo to Yamadera by train (about 3 hours).
Yamadera is one of the most impressive spiritual sites in Japan. It is a breathtaking temple complex. The dramatic views of prayer halls perched atop cliffs will take your breath away-as will the thousand-plus steps it takes to climb to the top!

Tendo - Mogami River
Travel from Tendo to Mogami River (Furukuchi) by Bullet train and JR train (about 90 min).
Enjoy boat tour to your accommodation "Beni". Mogami River is famous throughout Japan for its appearance in the poem "Samidare wo/atsumete hayashi/Mogamigawa" by the great Haiku master Basho Matsuo. Basho composed this lively poem during a boat journey down the rapids, portraying the rapid flow of the Mogami River following the long seasonal rains. The Mogami River is one of Japan's three fastest-flowing rivers however the popular boat tours are leisurely cruises while going through some rapids.

Mogami River - Mt. Haguro
Travel from Mogami River to Mt. Haguro by train and bus (about 2 hours).
Scaling the 2446 steps on the Pilgrimage trail up to sacred Mt. Haguro. Dewa is famous for the Dewa-Sanzan (the three sacred mountains of Dewa) which were at the centre of mountain worship practices of the Shugendo sect. Mt. Haguro (Black Feather Mountain) temple complex is the most well-known, situated at the top of 2446 stone steps. Today you will stay at this temple. Enjoy Shojin Ryori Ascetic Cuisine (Vegetarian meal).

Mt. Haguro - Yunohama Onsen
Travel from Mt. Haguro to Yunohama Onsen by bus (about 2 hours).
Yunohama Onsen offers luxurious hot spring experiences at hotels facing the Sea of Japan, the perfect location to enjoy a spectacular sunset view while taking a relaxing soak in an open-air bath. The view of the blazing sun setting over the Sea of Japan is awe-inspiring, colouring everything in an orange glow as the sun fades into the sea. Yunohama Onsen is located on the Yunohama Coast whose stunning sunset views have been officially recognised as one of Japan's 100 most beautiful.

Travel Yunohama Onsen to Tokyo by bus and trains (about 6 hours).
